21st Annual Self Advocate Leadership Institute  was at Camp Luther

On October 28th,2022  to October 30th,2022

 

Day 1 October 28th,2022

The event started at 5pm many as 40 self advocates came to Camp Luther in Mission BC.

Here room stayed in their as lounge

As we got their Gregg Schiller and Arlene Shouten went over the ground rules and activities for 3 days.

Then had a Community Dinner we had a  served buffet style in the main Dining Room

 . Then had fun at bon fire down on lake side Camp Luther mash mellows music their put on by Bryce Schaufelberger 80s music.

then rest night some went beck to building at camp Luther did own things some watched movie fast 8 movie.

 

Some went bed .

 

Day 2 October 29th,2022

Then morning came had breakfast served.

 

Workshop 1 Gregg Schiller EXPRESS YOURSELF

Gregg Schiller  played the piano and participants did draw pictures to the  music and express their feelings and share with the group. This was an interactive workshop for everyone to kick off our  weekend event by showing us how we can all work together through  music and expressing their feelings on a variety of topics.

 

 Workshop #2:  SelfAdvocateNet.com 

Self Advocate leader Bryce Schaufelberger did show self advocates their the latest changes to the #1 self advocacy website in the world developed from the very 1st Retreat 22 years ago.  Self advocates did have  opportunities to give their recommendations and feedback to improve the website more.

 

COMMUNITY LUNCH was served in the main Dining Room buffet style

Workshop #3 with Dorthy Hyslop and Gregg Schiller

Covid:  DEALING WITH THE EFFECTS OF ISOLATION, LONELINESS, AND OTHER CHANGES ETC, IN OUR LIVES FROM COVID

AND HOW TO DEAL WITH OTHER FUTURE WORLD CRISES AND DISASTERS (for example, future health scares, climate changes, etc.)

Gregg |Schiller did start off the discussion and facilitate everyone’s experiences along with input from our Guest Speaker Counsellor Dorothy Hyslop who  did talk with us about how to deal with the effects everyone experienced and suffered emotionally and psychologically around the loss of people close to us in our lives, etc..

 

WORKSHOP #4:  HEALTHY  RELATIONSHIPS and BOUNDARIES: WHAT’S APPROPRIATE AND WHAT’S NOT APPROPRIATE

Dorothy Hyslop did discuss how to stand up for yourself when strangers and people we know manipulate us in various ways including “love bombing”, and various abuses (physical, sexual, financial, etc.) and how we can deal with those situations and how to recognize and celebrate healthy relationships in our lives. Everyone did ask question.

 

Then was Coffee Break

 

Workshop #5: Exploring the Links between the Indigenous Community and People with the Disabilities

The Mission Centre for Indigenous People did do a presentation on the community support networks and cultural exchanges they offer the community.self advocates enjoyed their presentation.

 Then we went out side burned cannibus  for healing soul.

 

Then we took a group picture outside for selfadvocatenet.com.

Community Dinner was served buffet style in the main Dining Room

Workshop #7:  The SELF ADVOCACY GAME SHOW: HOUSE OF DRAGONS EDITION   

    

then they joined by  the surprise guest hosts King Viserys Targaryen and Princess Visenya Targaryen from the House of Dragons at that night special version of THE SELF ADVOCACY GAME SHOW. This required a full audience participation. everyone had fun was best part of retreat .

 

BONFIRE/MARSHALLOW ROAST was cancelled had rainy night

 

QUIET TIME

Did Relax inside with our new friends and watched a movie.

 Treasure Island Shawn Ferland movie brought watch it instead.

 

3rd day and last day  Sunday, October 30, 2022 

 

First was we Breakfast Buffet in the main Dining Room

 

Workshop #6:  SELF ADVOCACY GROUP

PRESENTATIONS

Guest speakers included was  National Self Advocate leader Barb Goode along with James White from ESATTA who then talked about their project called People Planning Together and the Mission Self Advocacy Group did do a presentation on their project and survey  was on accessibility in mission community presented by Tracy, Bryce ,JP Diane, jay Fraser, Shea and Arlene was group advisor writing things down from the  input from question from self advocates in room.

Last thing we thanked Gregg Schiller and Arlene Shouten for organizing the 21st Annual Self Advocacy Leadership Institute  at Camp Luther

 

Then the GOODBYES and Rides Home

 

Next year be 22nd Annual Self Advocacy Leadership Institute at Camp Luther
