My Guitar Story

By:  Reid Parkes

I first learned how to play the guitar in January 2022. My first guitar was from a relative and he got me a red acoustic guitar for Christmas Eve 2006. A few years later I got my second guitar. I also got a new guitar for my birthday last year and I am learning a lot of good music from different eras and genres of music. I learned some Elvis, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, etc. My favorite singer is Elvis Presley. I learned a lot by watching videos and by using Tabs. I can do songs like “Smoke on the Water,” “T.N.T.,” “I love Rock N’ Roll” and also “Mamma Mia.”
Everybody knows that I am into a lot of music and that is why I started Music Jeopardy in June 2020 on Zoom. But now we are doing everything in person.
We were using House Party for a while before June 2020, then after that, we were on Zoom when everything shut down.
During Covid in 2021 / 2022 I did Name the Tune with some groups from Ladner Connections on my guitar. They thanked me for playing and they really liked it so much that they wanted me to do it again, so I did. We had a Showcase at our Day Program in Surrey in November 2015 and we were showing off our display of what we did for our Showcase and mine was music. Then we had our Christmas Potluck in December 2015 and it was a lot of fun. At our Day Program we also do Karaoke. I really love playing songs for friends and family. I love practicing and learning. I take self videos of me playing my guitar and I post them on my social media for all of my friends and my family to watch.I had been going to concerts with my brother and we went to Def Leppard Poison, Tesla, Alice Cooper and Tom Jones. The last one I went to before everything shut down was the band Kiss. Then I was supposed to go back to Alice Cooper with Lita Ford in April 2021 but it got cancelled due to covid. That is why I have not been to a concert for four years. I hope you enjoyed reading my guitar story.
