What is the Self Advocacy Leadership Institute

It is a four-day event created by self advocate leaders to support the learning and skill development of 25 of their peer self advocates. If this year is successful, the planning committee would like to offer this opportunity every two years to a new group of peer self advocates.

Each day has a different learning focus for this year’s cohort. A cohort is a group of people learning together.

Day 1 – Foundational Learning and Skill Development

Day 2 – Rights, Advocacy & Self Determination

Day 3 – Resilience, Personal Care & Having Fun

Day 4 – Hopes, Dreams & Future Planning

At the end of the Institute, participants will receive a Certificate of Leadership.

Self advocacy is when people take control of their own lives, speak up for themselves, and ask for what they need. Self advocacy is the ability to tell people what you need and make informed decisions about the support necessary to meet those needs.

The Self Advocacy Movement is a movement made mostly of and by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are making their own decisions, speaking for themselves and for others with disabilities, and taking control over their lives.
