Premier’s statement on Canada Day

Statement by the Prime Minister on Canada Day

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Canada Day:

“No matter where you are, July 1 is an opportunity for us all to celebrate the country we call home, the people we share it with, and the future we’re building together.

“We can – and we should – take pride in all those things. After all, Canada is the envy of the world: people fleeing violence and persecution dream of a life here, businesses open headquarters in our cities and manufacturing plants in our towns, and world leaders look to us for leadership in times of crisis.

“Wherever our flag flies, it’s recognized as a symbol of democracy, of freedom, and of hope. It represents the values we all hold dear. And it is a promise. A promise of a country where newcomers are welcomed with open arms, where differences are celebrated and diversity is embraced, a country where you’re free to be who you are and love whom you love, where everyone has a real and fair chance at success, and a country where we acknowledge historical wrongs and learn from the past in order to build a better future – for everyone.

“Canada has withstood incredible challenges throughout our history, and we’ve always made it through by working hard together and staying true to our values. We did it when our grandparents stood up to fascism on the beaches of Normandy and across Europe. We’re doing it now when we step up to help those affected by wildfires. And we do it every day when we take a stand against hatred and discrimination.

“We are from far and wide, but united we are 40 million strong – and there is no challenge we cannot overcome together. So today, let’s celebrate each other, and let’s celebrate as we continue to build this great country. And let’s continue to seize every opportunity we can to make this country even better for our children and our children’s children.

“Happy Canada Day, everyone!”

Canada Day Recipes

Canada Day Strawberry Pancakes

Course Breakfast Cuisine American Prep Time 10 minutes Cook Time 15 minutes Chill Time 20 minutes Total Time 45 minutes Servings 16 pancakes

Strawberry Pancakes are an easy, sweet, and delicious breakfast recipe loaded with fresh strawberries and topped with Strawberry Sauce.

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • cups sliced strawberries
  • Strawberry Sauce for serving
  • butter for serving

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda and set aside.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, and oil.
  • Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the wet ingredients and 1 cup of the sliced strawberries, mixing with a rubber spatula just until combined. The batter will be lumpy. Do not to over beat the batter. Mix until it’s just combined but still lumpy, otherwise, you’ll get tough pancakes!
  • Place the batter in the refrigerator for 20 minutes until bubbles start to form all over the top.
  • Preheat the oven or your warming drawer to 200°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This will be used to put any cooked pancakes on so they don’t get cold and soggy while you’re cooking up the rest of the batter.
  • Heat a griddle to 350°F or a large skillet over medium heat and spray with nonstick spray.
  • Add ¼ cup of the pancake batter to the griddle or pan to make each pancake. Add a few additional slices of strawberries to the pancakes. Once the tops are all bubbly and the bottoms are golden brown, flip the pancakes and cook until done. Repeat until the batter is gone.

Recipe Notes

  • Buttermilk Substitute: Simply mix 1 cup of 2% or whole milk with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar. Whisk to combine.
  • Can I use frozen strawberries? I wouldn’t recommend it. They will give off too much excess moisture and since they are so cold, the batter around they will have a hard time cooking and fluffing up. Stick with fresh for the best texture and flavor.
  • How to freeze: Once cooked, allow them to cool and place them on a single layer on a sheet pan and put in the freezer. Once frozen, transfer the pancakes to a freezer bag and squeeze out any excess air. Bake or microwave to enjoy from frozen.
  • Nutritional information is an estimate based on a total of 16 pancakes and does not include toppings.

Canadian Flag Cake

Celebrate Canada Day with a flag cake! Vanilla sheet cake with a whipped cream cheese frosting, decorated with strawberries to make the Canada Flag. This will feed a crowd! Serve with extra sliced strawberries if desired.

By WestCoastMom
prep: 45 mins
cook: 20 mins
additional: 30 mins
total: 1 hr 35 mins
Servings: 24
Yield: 1 11X17-inch cake

Instructions Checklist
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour an 11X17-inch baking pan with 1-inch high sides.

  • Beat 1 1/2 cups sugar and butter together in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat one egg at a time into the butter mixture; beat in sour cream and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.

  • Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl. With mixer at low speed, add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with milk just until combined. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl and finish mixing with a rubber spatula. Pour batter into prepared pan; spread to corners of pan and smooth top with a spatula.

  • Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Cool cake completely, about 30 minutes. To remove cake from pan, run a paring knife between cake and pan. Cover cake pan with plate or cooling rack; invert to transfer cake onto plate.

  • Beat cream cheese, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract together in a bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Reduce mixer speed to low; slowly pour in cream. Once cream is incorporated, turn mixer speed to medium-high; beat until stiff peaks form, about 2 minutes.

  • Spread cream cheese mixture evenly over top and sides of cake, smoothing the top. Place 2 to 3 rows of overlapping strawberry slices parallel to short sides of cake for the two red stripes of the Canada flag. Trace out a maple leaf shape in center of cake with a toothpick; use points of strawberry slices to create points of maple leaf. Cut a strip of strawberry for the leaf stem; fill in the area of the maple leaf with sliced strawberries. Refrigerate cake until ready to serve.

Cook’s Notes:

Cake can be decorated and served right in the pan for easier transport. If removing the cake from the pan, frost the sides and add sliced strawberries around the edge for a nice presentation.

Raspberries can be used for the sides of the flag, but strawberries work best for the maple leaf.

You can find Maple Leaf templates for your cake online.

Store leftover cake, covered, in the refrigerator.
