Where: Nechako Gathering & Residence, at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus in Kelowna
Come join us to hear stories from self advocates, learn about ways to advocate for your rights, connect with community leaders, and share your experiences!

What is the Self Advocacy Leadership Institute

It is a four-day event created by self advocate leaders to support the learning and skill development of 25 of their peer self advocates. If this year is successful, the planning committee would like to offer this opportunity every two years to a new group of peer self advocates.

Each day has a different learning focus for this year’s cohort. A cohort is a group of people learning together.

Day 1 – Foundational Learning and Skills

Day 2 – Rights, Advocacy, & Self Determination

Day 3 – Resilience, Personal Care, & Having Fun

Day 4 – Hopes, Dreams, & Future Planning

At the end of the Institute, participants will receive a Certificate of Leadership.

Self advocacy is when people take control of their own lives. Self advocacy is sharing or expressing what you need and making informed decisions about the support you receive.

The Self Advocacy Movement is a movement made mostly of and by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are taking control of their lives and communicating as a group of active citizens.
