Dear Self Advocates,
I would like to invite you to the 19th Annual Self Advocacy Leadership Retreat takes on October 19 – October 21, 2018
We are going to host this event at a new location called Camp Luther Retreat Centre located in Mission, BC.
We used to go to Edenvale but now we can host more people to attend at this new place.
It is a bigger facility that can accommodate all our growing needs as our amazing network of friends come together from all over British Columbia to plan our own lives and future of the self advocacy movement and discuss our Rights and other important issues relevant to our lives.
I look forward to meeting new people and seeing old friends again.

Cost: $260 (price includes tax)
per person includes: 2 nights and 3 days accommodations, healthy meals,
registration, all workshops, recreation, and FUN.

5:00 p.m. Everyone arrives at Camp Luther
WELCOME & INTRODUCTIONS
Gregg Schiller and Arlene Schouten will go over the Ground Rules
and how we can all live and work together this weekend to make this a strong supportive community for the weekend
6:00 p.m. COMMUNITY DINNER
8:00 p.m. BONFIRE/MARSHMALLOW ROAST
Join us for a Sing-a Long Bonfire. This is a Memorial to our friend Courage Eigbike.
We will be joined by members of Courage’s musical band with John Welsh and Chris Welsh by the campfire.
We will also roast marshmallows with our friends.
11:00 p.m. QUIET TIME
Relax inside the Retreat Centre and hang out with new friends. We can also watch DVD movies on TV.

9:00 a.m-10:00 a.m. Breakfast will be served in the Dining Hall and staff will be available to serve you
10:00 a.m- 10:45 am. Workshop #1: Diversity in our Communities
Guest Ken Herar who is running for Mission City Council will talk
about his Program “Cycle for Diversity”.
He will give an inspirational talk about the importance of diversity in our communities.
10:45 am – 12:45 pm Workshop #2: SelfAdvocateNet.com
Self Advocate leader Bryce Schaufelberger and Jessica Humphries, the Self Advocacy Coordinator for CLBC,
will show you the new changes to the #1 self advocacy website in the world developed from the very 1st Self Advocacy Retreat 19 years ago.
You will have opportunities to give your recommendations and feedback to improve the website more.
1:00 p.m. COMMUNITY LUNCH
2:00 p.m. – Workshop #3: Express Yourself Through Creative Free Movement and Dance
Guest artist Heather Myers, former ballerina with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, will lead a fun interactive class on free movement
on how to create our own dance to express our feelings about life. We will use the Gym building on the property for this workshop.
3:15 pm BREAK
3:15 p.m. Workshop #4: Express Yourself & Learn to Compose Music
Guest Nikola Tosic will teach us how to work together as a group and write music to express how we feel about life and our Retreat
4:45 p.m. Workshop #5: STOP BULLYING and SEXUAL HARRASSMENT
Guest Speakers Counsellor Dorothy Hyslop and members of the Burnaby Self Advocacy Group will talk with us about
how to deal with Bullies in various forms and ways in our lives and provide you with a copy of their new plain language booklet stop Bullying.
We will learn hot to deal with these uncomfortable situations and how we can recognize and celebrate healthy relationships in our lives.
6:00 p.m. Community Dinner
7:30 p.m. Workshop #6: The SELF ADVOCACY GAME SHOW
Join your favourite game show hosts Corky Montana and Vanna White for your favourite TV show THE SELF ADVOCACY GAME SHOW.
This requires full audience participation.
9:00 p.m. BONFIRE/MARSHALLOW ROAST
Join us for a Bonfire. Sing by the campfire and roast marshmallows with all your friends
11:00 p.m. QUIET TIME
Relax inside with our new friends

9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Breakfast is available with staff to serve you
10:00 a.m – 10:30 a.m. Workshop #7: How to Start Your Own Business Enterprise
Guest speaker Krystian Shaw will tell us about how he started his own newsletter and created a publishing enterprise on his own.
Get inspired to start your own business enterprise from this excellent example of commitment and determination.
10:30 am-11:15 am Workshop #8: Express Yourself Through Music and Art
Gregg Schiller will play the piano and everyone can relax and listen
and draw pictures to the music and express how they feel about the music in a safe environment to share their feelings with everyone.
11:15 am-12:00 pm GOOD BYES and Rides Home
Everyone will have a chance to go around our final Circle together and share their stories from this weekend
and the lessons they learned and provide recommendations for next year’s 20th Anniversary of our Self Advocacy Leadership Retreat.

I.D. (Identification cards in case of emergency)
Comfortable Clothes for November weather
Medications (if you take them)
All your own Toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo, & deodorant, etc.)
Bedsheets & Blankets or Sleeping Bags AND Pillows
(If you have incontinent issues, please bring your own Depends and plastic sheets to protect the mattresses)
