As the film opens in the heart of Havana, Cuba, the area is populated by Cubans of all skin tones — light to dark — to authentically represent the city itself alongside breathtaking and strikingly detailed production design. Apart from the character designs, the background designs of the various locations that Gabi and Vivo trek through are absolutely breathtaking. “Vivo” is strategically contrived to hit audiences’ pleasure spots, blending a grown-up-friendly story of a Latin-music couple whose careers took them in separate directions with all the hyper-caffeinated comedy action the kiddos expect from the medium. Plus, the songs build on one another, hooking in your head and snowballing as the movie develops.

Suicide Squad 2021

Many will see James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” as a funhouse mirror inversion of the writer/director’s work with “Guardians of the Galaxy.” After all, it’s another collection of underdog heroes who overcome all odds to defeat an interstellar enemy. “Guardians for Adults” wouldn’t be entirely incorrect. However, the main influence on this clever action comedy isn’t Starlord but The Toxic Avenger.
For the record, this is kind of half-sequel, half-reboot wherein some actors play the same characters but it’s also very much a standalone film. Amanda Waller, the head of something called Task Force X. She is in charge of what is essentially the Suicide Squad, a collection of superpowered criminals who are sent into battle with chips embedded in the back of their heads. Go off mission, go boom. Don’t do what you’re told, go boom. Say something wrong to Waller, go boom. Most of these anti-heroes don’t return. Hence, the name.

Pray away

viewed on Netflix
“Pray Away” is a wise and compassionate film about anti-gay conversion therapy as it’s practiced and encouraged by the evangelical church. As a therapy, it’s destructive and a disaster, and the documentary doesn’t shy away from saying so. At the same time, “Pray Away” demonstrates an understanding of the warmth, welcome and fellowship that make church such a powerful and, to some degree, nurturing influence on people’s lives.

Thus, the movie’s compassion is not limited to the therapy’s victims but to its practitioners as well, some of whom are also victims. Like few things in life, the evangelical church offers to take people in with unconditional love and offer them friends and community, if only they will speak the truth about themselves.

But there’s a catch: If you’re gay, the truth about yourself is precisely what you then must give up. You’re expected to “pray away the gay.”
