I am a part of Kyndred Community Living Society (formerly Delta Community Living Society) and I live in one of the residential houses.

I am passionate about self-care and always advocate for it. I eat healthy and get my nails and hair done regularly. I wear comfortable, yet stylish clothes. I love fashion! I get inspired by reading magazines and often recreate my favorite looks. I want to share my journey of learning a new self-care skill: blow-drying my hair.

I have a condition where my hands shake a lot. This makes it difficult for me to hold things. I have come a long way doing hand exercises such as coloring, outbound stretching, and working with bracelet beads. This helped minimize the shakiness.

After much hard work, I can now do certain tasks independently, which I am very proud of! When I first started blow-drying my hair, I was terrified. This was mainly because of the loud noise and heat. I was anxious about not being able to hear my surroundings clearly when the dryer would be on. It took some time to practice, but I am thankful to my staff for being patient with me. Sometimes, I held the dryer too close and sometimes too far, but now I can hold it just right!

This is a special skill for me as I love getting my hair done. Part of what makes this new skill special is that I can participate in my self-care.

My friends at the day program get inspired by my story as they know how difficult it can be to try new things. But I’m here to show them that anything is possible, and it’s never too late. I am so thankful for the support I receive as it has helped add valuable things to my life.
