New Year is a global celebration marking the start of a new calendar year, commonly on January 1st in the widely used Gregorian calendar, symbolizing new beginnings, reflection, and hope, celebrated with parties, fireworks, and setting resolutions for self-improvement,

Key aspects of New Year:
  • Timing:

Most globally recognize January 1st, preceded by New Year’s Eve (December 31st).

  • Celebrations:

Festivities include fireworks, parties, parades, church services, and gatherings with loved ones.

  • Traditions:

Common customs involve making New Year’s Resolutions (goals for self-improvement, dating back to Babylonians) and activities like the “Polar Bear Plunge“ in cold waters.

  • Cultural Variety:

Other cultures celebrate at different times, such as the Chinese Lunar New Year (Jan/Feb) or the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) in autumn.

  • Historical Roots:

The January 1st date stems from Roman traditions honoring Janus, the god of beginnings, formalized with the Gregorian calendar reform.

In essence, it’s a universal occasion for cultural observance, personal reflection, and welcoming fresh starts.

Why Is January 1st The “New Year”?

Selfadvocatenet.com New Years Day Message 2026

Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking New Year’s Day:

Victoria Wednesday, December 31, 2025 7:30 AM

“Tonight, people across British Columbia will reflect on the year we’ve been through and look forward to the one ahead.

“This has been a year like none other in our history. It began with the president of our largest trading partner and a longstanding ally threatening our economy and our sovereignty. Those attacks have had real consequences for people and communities.

“But British Columbians responded the way we always do. We came together to defend the country we love, to stand up for one another and to support the workers and communities caught in the crossfire.

“Throughout the year, our government’s focus has been clear: building a stronger, more resilient economy that is less dependent on the United States and that works better for people here at home.

“We are seeing encouraging signs all around us. New job-creating projects are reaching final investment decisions and thousands of good jobs are being created across the province. British Columbia will be the economic engine that powers a stronger and more independent Canadian economy – which is both a huge opportunity we must seize and a deep responsibility to the country to deliver on.

“We are also turning the corner on other big challenges. Rents are beginning to come down, thousands more people are now connected to a family doctor, and major infrastructure projects are coming online to support growing communities.

“Even as we make progress, we know many people are still struggling. Families are feeling stretched, especially at this time of year. That’s why the work ahead matters just as much as what we’ve accomplished so far.

“That work means training British Columbians for the skilled trades, so they are first in line for new jobs and higher paycheques. It means continuing to bring down the cost of daily essentials and creating the wealth necessary to improve the public services people depend on.

“There is nowhere else in the world I would rather be to face big challenges and a changing world than here in British Columbia. We have everything we need: skilled people, abundant resources and a shared commitment to look out for one another.

“As we say goodbye to the past year, let’s welcome the new one with confidence and with hope, knowing that together we can keep building a stronger, brighter future for British Columbia.”

Prime Minister statement on the New Years

“Tonight, Canadians will gather with loved ones to celebrate the start of the New Year.

This is a time for families and friends across the country to come together and to welcome the year ahead. On New Year’s Eve, we pause to reflect on the moments over the year that brought us joy, and the people in our lives who made them special.

Although this year has brought more than its share of challenges to our country, we have also been reminded that we are fortunate to be part of one extraordinary, generous, and caring nation.

We are strongest when we are united, when we look out for each other, and when we take care of each other. That is what makes Canada strong.

As this year comes to a close, we resolve to carry that same spirit and those same values into 2026.

Happy New Year, Canada.”

Happy New Year!

Should old acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot In the days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear For auld lang syne We’ll take a cup of kindness yet For the sake of auld lang syne

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup! And surely I’ll buy mine! And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet For the sake of auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear For auld lang syne We’ll take a cup of kindness yet For the sake of auld lang syne

We two have run about the slopes And picked the daisies fine We’ve wandered many a weary foot Since the days of auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear For auld lang syne We’ll take a cup of kindness yet For the sake of auld lang syne

We two have paddled in the stream From morning sun till dine But seas between us broad have roared Since the days of auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear for auld lang syne we’ll take a cup of kindness yet for the sake of auld lang syne

And there’s a hand my trusty friend! And give me a hand o’ thine! We’ll take a cup of kindness yet for the days of auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear for auld lang syne we’ll take a cup of kindness yet for the sake of auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear for auld lang syne we’ll take a cup of kindness yet for the sake of auld lang syne
