Wishes for Future Gens: My Hopes

A person with short dark hair and glasses is smiling at the camera. They are wearing a grey shirt and standing indoors, with part of a flag and mirror visible in the background.

I hope you enjoy this slam poetry about my wishes for future generations based on my experiences with family, friends, home, school and identity.

I hope life is better for you than it was for me.
I hope you don’t have to go through what I went through.

I hope you have your family’s support.

Otherwise, you don’t have much of anything.

I hope you make good friends.

Watch who you trust. Be valued and respected.

I hope your home is your sanctuary.

Don’t bring in any negativity. Comforting and calm.

I hope school is better for everyone.

It can be so hard and painful. Get the support you need. I hope you know you’re worthy of learning. Not a trophy, a paper, or a weird grad.

I hope you don’t have to prove you have a disability constantly.

Over and over and over. Denied and trying again.

I hope you have enough to live off.

I hope you have the funding and coverage for everything you need.

I hope you use your voice to demand what you need.

I hope you have work you love. I hope you’re hired and not fired. I hope you find your passion.

I hope you get the healthcare you need. I hope you get the amount you need when you need it.

I hope our current crises are resolved so that everyone can get the help they need.
I hope that leaders are honest, do what they say and help you.

I hope you are healthy, safe, loved, and connected.
I hope.

Community Living Month Oct 2026

October 2026 has been proclaimed Community Inclusion Month in British Columbia, recognizing the importance of building communities where everyone has the opportunity to belong, participate, and thrive. The proclamation is an important statement of what an inclusive province should look like: a place where everyone has opportunity, choice and control in their own lives, and where people with disabilities are welcomed as full and valued members of their communities.
